This writer was very impressed with the “engineering and technical” skills displayed by these young women. The potential for what they learn here will be well worth looking forward to. CONGRATULATIONS and GOOD LUCK to the Robotic Team.

Boy Scouts – Girl Scouts – Leaders and Parents

The annual event honoree is usually kept a secret until the night of honors, however, due to the vast number of participants expected, the troops and leaders were advised in mid September and were invited to bring their members to the presentation ceremony. Attendees were more than eager to line the walls or sit on the floor in order to pay tribute to these phenomenal young people.

The Scouts stayed on to attend as Council President Roma issued the oath of office to the Borough’s newest officer Phillip Schena. (also a former Scout, who’s Troop Leader happened to be present) Officer Schena was attended by family and fellow officers and received a thunderous welcome from the crowd in attendance.

And this year

and this year A Stanley Steamer….. yes a REAL STANLEY STEAMER

Take a moment to remember all those who died in service to our nation.  They selflessly gave to defend our freedom.  If not for them, where would we be and what would life be like.

Congratulations to both.

HONORING OUR VETERANS

I was fortunate enough to spend Veterans Day in our Nations Capital, and was able to witness many services honoring our veterans. Allow me to share the privilege with you. Please click photos to enlarge.

The Viet Nam Memorial Service was the first on our list - a moving tribute.

Here we have the 5th Cavalry coming down the promenade from the Korean War Memorial as they ended their ceremony.

As we walked from service to service, we spotted many veterans chatting with our currently serving men and women. It was both heartwarming and sad.

The World War II Memorial - is a stunning site. Representing the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres of War. Every State is given it's representation in the field of monuments honoring their fallen heros.

Our trip would not be complete if we didn't take pictures of our famous landmarks of the Capital....

July 30th at the Beach - 2005

Eagle Scout Eric Dollman (top right photo) spear headed his Eagle Scout "parking bumpers" project, along with other scouts Ben Zee - Jesse Gargani - Mark Rutkowski and Gene Weir.

July 30th at the Beach - 2005

Jersey Golden Oldies - Courtesy of the Beachwood Alliance and the Borough, provided songs for sunset on July 30th at the Beach. Line dancing in the sand - and couples under the pavillion. We took a trip back in time to the great Rock n Roll era, when you could sing along with the musicians, you understood all the words, an actually danced in the arms of your partner.

Don't sweat it if you missed this one - they'll be back with "Golden Hits Through the Years" on August 14th. - bring your beach chairs - your honey - Grandma , Grandpa and even the kids. Cut a rug - on the sand - or just sway in your seats - You'll have a mellow evening.

Introduction of a New Ordinance

The May 18th meeting of Mayor and Council saw the introduction of a "pedophile free" zone Ordinance that would implement a 1,000 foot zone. This is the next step in the Borough's efforts to address Megan's Law and strengthen the municipal ability to aware of any situation that would affect the community.

Assemblyman Brian Rump, who has spearheaded legislation on our behalf, was joined by Ocean County Freeholder Gerry Little, Mayor Russell Corby (Pine Beach) Mayor Jason Varrano (Berkeley) and Beachwood Elementary School Principal Maureen Zuck in offering their support and commendations to the Borough for leading the battle in addressing these issues.

We urge all residents and interested parties, to contact their State representatives and tell them to "jump on the bandwagon" and support all efforts by local communities . We realize we cannot prevent a "pedophile" who is intent on abusing, but we can most certainly make it difficult for them to come in contact with any children. As Mayor Morris has so frequently said, in our battle to address these problems, "if we can prevent, even one child from being hurt, it will have been worth every effort put forth".

Young Achievers

Mayor Morris and members of Council congratulated Mark Rutkowski (Center) on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Mark was feted in an Eagle Court of Honor on May 1st. Joining in the congratulations is Gene Moir, working on his Eagle Scout Rank and scheduled to enter the Court of Honor in October.

The Borough is fortunate to have been the recipient of Eagle Scout projects over the years. The current projects for Mark and Gene "parking bumpers" at Mayo Park have added to the improvements we see around town.

More importantly, Beachwood is the home to 26 Eagle Scouts and more to come. That in itself is a testament to the caliber of young men and women of Beachwood. Usually that number of Eagle Rank Scouts is found in larger communities.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR SCOUTS - and thier very proud parents.

Young Achievers

At the February 16, 2005 meeting, the governing body presented certificates to Alexandra Russo - for being honored as the N.J. Municipal Alliance Volunteer of the Year. Great pleasure for this photographer, because when Alex was in the first grade (now a soph in High School) she wanted to learn about how her town was run. She spent the day learning all about Beachwood, now look at her, all grown up and achieving State honors for volunteering in her community and beyond.

Also on hand were the USABL Monmouth Ocean western division champs. A great group of kids, in a first ever championship.

MOVIES WITH MUNICIPAL ALLIANCE

Friday February 18th, A SHARKS TALE, at the Beachwood Elementary School. A great night had by parents and kids alike. Blankets and chairs adorned the floor of the Cafeteria. Popcorn, soda and goodies shared by all.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR
IN BEACHWOOD

With the sound of pipers and the voice of Courtney Zahn, the Borough of Beachwood re-organized on January 5th.

Ocean County Surrogate Jeffrey W. Moran issued the oath of office to Gerald W. LaCrosse with Grandaughter Amber holding "her" own bible for the official ceremony.

Councilman Miserendino was accompanied by his wife Patricia and grandsons sharing the honors with their grandfather.

Ceremonies continued with the Oath of Office issued to our newest Police Officer Frank Mellillo, who was joined by his uncle for the occasion.

Re-organizations have always been a "family affair" here in Beachwood and we encourage all our family members, young and old, to join in the grand celebration of the re-birth of government.

Councilman Feeney, did the honors, with young Connor as they swore in Mrs. Feeney to our Recreation Commission. Connor was just as serious about taking the oath as Mom was, repeating every word.

The remaining appointees received their turn at taking the oath throughout the evening.

Megan's Law Amendments

Assemblyman Brian Rumpf (9th Legislative District) and Mayor Harold R. Morris spoke on behalf of Megans Law amendments at the League of Municipalities Annual Convention in Atlantic City, November 17, 2004.

Senator Inverso, Deputy AG Finkel, Essex County Prosecutorial rep. Cindy Licardo, were among the speakers addressing proposed legislation authored by Assemblyman Rumpf at the request of Beachwood Mayor and Council. The amendment was authored in response to the release of a Tier 3 offender into the Borough of Beachwood in 2003. The changes suggested will address notification to "elected officials" charged with the Safety and Welfare of their community.

The attendees at the session had some surprising information brought to light with regard to how the "tier" classification is addressed and how the offender is or is not listed on the website.

You can check the N.J. State Police web site where they have a page dedicated to "sex offenders". Educate yourself, be aware.

Mayor Morris and Chief John Wagner presented promotion badges to our new Captain, William Cairns and Sergeant Bruce Harris. Mr. Cairns, proud father of Capt. Cairns did the honors in pinning on the new badge, while Beachwood Officer Eric Harris did the honors for his father Sgt. Bruce Harris. It was definitely a "Father and Son" event. We wish both Capt. Cairns and Sgt. Harris much success.

And The Beat Goes On!

The threat of rain could not dampen the spirits of the 100 plus listening to Kevin Kelton and his Orchestra. The hour plus was filled with great music from Count Basie to Barry Manilow. Great Tunes such as Nat King Coles "Incredible" Duke Ellingtons "Satin Doll" and many more were shared during the sunset hours of the evening along the beachfront.

Mayor Morris, and Municipal Clerk Mastropasqua attended representing the Borough. The Assembly called upon Mayor Morris to read the "Senate Prayer".

KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE

In 2003, the Borough had it’s first and hopefully last experience in dealing with the re-location of a Tier 3 Sex Offender into our community. Learning the hard way that we were somewhat powerless in dealing with the law (Megans Law) as it existed, Mayor Morris began a battle to address changes in the law, which would provide more information to the municipalities involved. With the aid of Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, legislation was drafted to amend Megans Law. Assembly Bill #963 is now on it’s way to legislation.

Hoping to garner support from the surrounding Communities, a petition was prepared urging our State Legislators to support the passage of the bill. In a special ceremony held on Wednesday May 5th, prior to the Council Meeting, Mayor Morris and Assemblyman Rump invited Mayor(s) Russell Corby (Pine Beach ) and Jason Verano (Berkeley Twp) to join in their effort.

Nearly 100 signatures were garnered in the 30 minute ceremony. Among those who offered their support were Ocean County Freeholder Jerry Little and Beachwood Elementary School Principal Maureen Zuck.

The petition will be available at the Municipal Complex , Monday through Friday 9:00 – 4:00 for the next 2 weeks, for anyone interested in supporting the effort.

Citizen of the Year 2003

(click photos to enlarge)

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

In a time when our nation struggles towards a goal of peace through out the world we as a community, must come to grips with the reality of the price we pay for peace. Daily we are overwhelmed by the reports of casualties among our young men and women serving in Iraq. Men and women throughout our Country dedicate themselves to the preservation of this nation and it’s goals. We realize that they come from all walks of life, and eagerly assume the responsibility for the safety of their fellow man. Often when they return from Military Service, those of us they have defended, seemed to have forgotten the great service they have given us.

It is the hope of this Governing Body, that on the occasion of naming our 2003 Citizen of the Year, we can properly express our sincere appreciation for their dedication to our Nation, our State and our Community. It is with great honor, and true gratitude that we name our Beachwood Citizen of the Year………

Our Men and Women of our Armed Forces

We honor them, and their families and offer
our thanks and prayers for their safety

THAT WONDERFUL BIG BAND FLAVOR

Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge
As the sun set off the Beach, an old time tradition came back to the River. The Ocean County Band Shell - and the Witman Orchestra entertained the crowd with that wonderful BIG BAND FLAVOR.

The thoughtful families had dinner at the beach and made it a great night of musical entertainment. The Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary prepared coffee and goodies as a fund raiser.

I remember when I first moved to Beachwood - 1976 - and the great band shell on the river across from Mathis Plaza in South Toms River. Those Saturday evenings listening to the wonderful sounds from the orchestra. We'd hoped for years to get them back to the river, without much success. It just waited until Council woman Beverly Clayton and her valiant Recreation Commissioners gave it the big push for the past year or so. It was a wonderful evening to be shared with family and friends. Can't wait for next year's schedule. Thanks Beverly and Recreation Commission

WE DEFINITELY HAVE
A STAR ON OUR HANDS

Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge
Family, friends and her Soccer team mates, were on hand to officially welcome Courtney Zahn home from her 3 week stint in Hollywood. Her appearance on Star Search only proved what we all knew for several years, WE DEFINITELY HAVE A STAR ON OUR HANDS.

When I asked her about her experience, it was clear from her response that she had a great time.

Courtney made us all very proud, and placed Beachwood on the National Map. Her Mom told us, that when "Star Search" was creating her film bio for her appearences, they didn't know where Beachwood was, so they suggested she use a more familiar larger town that would be easier to recognize. Courtney's response was - I'm from BEACHWOOD NEW JERSEY. No if's ands or buts. That's our Courtney.

When we visited with her at the Welcome Home Rally, our star was simply Our Courtney, complete in Soccer Uniform hanging with the team.

Courtney will be joining the Governing Body for the Memorial Day activities on May 26th. JOIN US!
